Day 1: Welcome to Rabaul!

Today you will be picked up from Tokua airport upon your arrival in an air-conditioned van, the ride to Rabaul may take up to 40 minutes traffic depending. Departing Tokua, you will pass through Kokopo, the current township of East New Britain, after the volcanic eruption that completely destroyed Rabaul the township was relocated to Kokopo, your ride today takes you along the beach and through mostly vegetation forest areas with villages dotted along the road.

You check into your hotel – rebuilt after the volcano eruption in 1994. This hotel is named after the famous “Hotel Rabaul”, which was destroyed during the bombing campaign on Rabaul in WWII the “RH” has been hosting visitors since 1952.

Day 2 and Day 3: Rabaul Tour

Over the course of these two days, you will have an experienced and knowledgable guide with you, who will take you on a tour of the township of Rabaul and areas. Over two days, locations that can be visited are Rabaul Volcano Observatory, New Guinea Club which is the last standing bastion of Colonial Rule in the Islands. The New Guinea Club was a Gentlemen’s club with strict guidelines to Membership.  It was destroyed in both WWars & rebuilt in the 1950's to its former glory only to be destroyed again by fire in 1994. Further damage was caused by the ’94 volcanic eruptions.  It has since been partially restored by the few staunch members left in Rabaul. It is now the home of the Rabaul Historical Society. We will also visit MATUPIT ISLAND FIRST LANDING of MISSIONARIES. On the left of Matupit is the site & a memorial stone, where the first Sacred Heart Missionaries landed in Rabaul circa 1875. Also quite a good view of Matupit Volcano.  2/22nd LARK FORCE & MV MARU ROCK MEMORIAL Memorial. In honor of the 2nd 22nd Battalion left to defend Rabaul against the invading forces and the lost souls of the Montevideo Maru. Still today, Australia’s largest maritime tragedy, with over 1100 hundred men and boys who died on the “Hell Ship” at Subic Bay. The Hotel has Books in its Office you can borrow on these subjects.

 Accommodation and breakfast only. Lunch and Dinner NOT included over two days.  


Day 4: Transfer to the Airport

This morning you will transfer from your hotel to the airport for your flight to Port Moresby.

It is recommend that loose clothing, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes or sandals preferably flat, camera, water. - and maybe a shoulder bag for anything you might buy (for a few kina, you can get a rough bag sewn from a rice bag at the market)
